M&F Talent / Bloomberg Law Interview: Marijuana Business Employee Perks
In early April 2018, the recruiting team at Mac & Fulton Talent Partners were contacted by Bloomberg Law Group. A reporter from this world-famous business media source was curious about marijuana business employee perks. To this end, they reached out to M&F Talent due to our knowledge and experience relating to cannabis recruiting. M&F Talent’s Kent Gruetzmacher facilitated the call with Bloomberg Law. Kent also introduced their reporting team to more cannabis industry connections featured in the interview.
The article titled “Cannabis Cos. Light Up Their Game with Dope Employee Perks” was published on April 20, 2018. This interview came out with a slew of media coverage on everyone’s favorite marijuana holiday “420.” The reporter from Bloomberg Law, Carmen-Castro Pagan, was curious about what sort of perks cannabis companies offer employees. Also, Pagan wanted to know how these perks are utilized to attract top talent for cannabis jobs. As one of the foremost cannabis recruiting agencies, M&F Talent proved a great source of information.
Complications with Employee Benefits in the Cannabis Industry
In Kent’s discussions with Pagan, the interview quickly turned to marijuana business employee perks as relating to benefits. To this end, cannabis companies often have a difficult time offering insurance packages for their employees. The reasons for this are two-fold. For starters, most cannabis companies are still in the startup phase. Therefore, they simply don’t have the financial backing to offer competitive benefits packages, including health insurance. Secondly, as mentioned in the article by Jarrod Mason of Los Suenos Farms, many insurance providers simply will not deal with cannabis companies. Unfortunately, many insurance companies are afraid that the federal government will take legal or financial action if they receive money from the cannabis business.
The complications with benefits related to marijuana business employee perks represent another way that outdated taboos are hindering market growth. The cannabis industry needs talented professionals to progress. However, cannabis companies have a difficult time attracting top talent for their cannabis jobs without competitive benefits packages. As a progressive cannabis industry recruitment company, M&F Talent consistently works with clients to look for ways to compensate for this shortfall. Thus far, solutions include ownership equity and internal employment promotion.
