Farm Operations Manager – Hydroponics

M&F Talent has a client in the urban farming space that needs to hire a Farm Operations Manager. Our client is a nonprofit that is part of a youth-led food justice movement that helps ensure people have access to fresh, healthy food.

As the Farm Operations Manager, you will experience the rewards of building meaningful, working solutions to food insecurity in local communities.

Our client seeks a Farm Operations Manager to oversee, manage, and support the operations, training, production, and maintenance for its 5 indoor hydroponic farm sites in New York, NY. They will also oversee 3 new facilities being developed in Denver, CO, and Miami, FL.

Location: New York, NY

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee farm operations to ensure production, maintenance, appearance, safety, and protocol compliance.farm operations manager
  • Develop and supervise Farmer-Educators’ execution of year-round crop plans, including managing orders/quotes of bulk farm supplies and related purchases as needed.
  • Manage logistics for supply inventory orders on an ongoing basis (e.g., ordering supplies, managing delivery schedules, tracking and reporting on spending).
  • Ensure farm production and operations data is accurately tracked, submitted, and reported with written progress reports.
  • Work with Senior Hydroponics Systems Manager on infrastructure planning, implementation, construction, repairs.
  • Training and educating Farmer-Educators to facilitate and enhance student knowledge and technical skills related to urban farming.
  • Collaborate with staff to support Curricular Day and After-school programs, events, and workshops from a farming perspective.
  • Ensure adherence to compliance requirements for project goals, legal agreements, and organizational policies and protocols related to the farms.
  • Collect and supply farm-related data to support marketing, development, communications, and evaluation efforts.
  • Develop and manage a Food Safety Program, including maintaining food safety, risk management, and hazard action plan protocols and standards.
  • Assist hydroponic farmer students with implementing Standard Operating Procedures, including cleaning and maintenance.
  • Coordinate farm internships, volunteer programs, events, tours, and workshops.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of commercial greenhouse and/or vertical farm operations (5,000 sf+).
  • Experience developing and managing a Food Safety Program and food safety risk management and hazard action plan protocols and standards.
  • Studies in horticulture, agriculture, molecular biology, plant science (Can be supplemented with experience)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of CEA – commercial greenhouse and vertical farming operations experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License; ability to drive a cargo van in New York City.
  • Able to perform basic manual labor, including occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience with managing daily operations and logistics coordination of multiple project site locations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth/young adults and working in low-income communities of color.
  • Experience with Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
  • Knowledge of crop selection, growing, harvest, and post-harvest techniques;
  • Experience in the safe operation and general maintenance of farm facilities/equipment, including carpentry skills and design planning.
  • Expert at training and supporting multiple farm managers in cultivating and producing leafy greens and vine crops grown in indoor hydroponic systems.
  • Understanding of instrumentation, data collection, process automation, and control systems.
  • Contacts with retail, wholesale, foodservice customers, hydroponic equipment suppliers, packaging suppliers, and distributors (preferred).
