M&F Talent has a client in fertilizer development that is looking to fill a Fertilizer Soil Scientist job. Our client is on the cutting-edge of cannabis cultivation science and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) processes. Furthermore, they have a sophisticated research and development greenhouse operation in Colorado. They are looking for the right soil scientist to help oversee research at this facility.

The ideal candidate has a PHD in Soil Science and extensive managerial experience in organic laboratory / R+D settings. Furthermore, a background in fertilizer development is also required. Our horticulture recruiting team feels this is more of a technical career than seen with most horticulture jobs.

Location: Colorado

Fertilizer Soil Scientist Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop new organic and non-organic nutrients for crop propagation
  • Study the cannabis industry and vertical farming space to understand consumer needs
  • Explain lab findings to company leadership
  • Work with lab technicians in problem-solving efforts
  • Develop products for modern fertigation and hydroponics systems (ebb and flow / nutrient film technique)
  • Monitors laboratory research
  • Conducts laboratory analysis of soil samples and research experiments
  • Completes paperwork and cataloging findings
  • Write research reports and making presentations on findings, including scientific research papers and non-scientific client reports
  • Interprets science to inform policy
  • Keep up to date with developments in soil science and related areas, as well as environmental issues and changes in legislation that may impact work
  • Ensure that all products meet cannabis testing laboratory standards fertilizer soil scientist job
  • Work hand-in-hand with management to meet deadlines and realize company vision


  • PHD in soil sciences, agriculture, botany, biology, agronomy or related field
  • 5 years of management experience in an organic lab or R+D facility
  • Familiarity with: bio-stimulants, organic fertilizers, aerobic and anaerobic digestion technologies, organic disease suppression and control, and plant nutrition technologies.
  • Experience developing SOPs and workflows in a lab setting
  • Knowledge about the cannabis industry and essential elements of cannabis horticulture
  • Great communication skills
  • IT skills
  • Ability to write extensive laboratory / scientific reports
  • Technologically savvy
