The 5 Most Influential People in Cannabis

The 5 Most Influential People in the Cannabis Space

In mid 2017, the editorial team at Maximum Yield Magazine came to M&F Talent’s Kent Gruetzmacher with a topic idea. There were toying with the notion of putting together an article that surveys the most influential people in the modern cannabis industry. Due to Kent’s experience as a cannabis writer, as well as involvement in the industry with M&F Talent, the people at Maximum Yield asked him to cover the topic.

Writing About the Most Important People in Cannabis people in cannabis

Kent was honored to take this momentous task on. Similarly he quickly got to brainstorming on what five people he would elect to use for the article. Yet, from the offset of the researching and writing process, he was perplexed on this central question: what criteria make someone influential in the cannabis industry? To illustrate, locations like Northern California have produced innumerable world class cannabis growers. Similarly, many of the industry’s finest hash and concentrate producers operate explicitly in the underground. Yet, while these people are doubtlessly influential in the cannabis business, many remain unknown to this day. In mulling over ideas like these, Kent decided to use a logical approach to writing the article.

In breaking down the modern cannabis industry into constituent parts, Kent realized there are four distinct arenas of the movement into which all people fall: horticulture, cannabis advocacy, medical science, and cannabis business. Within these distinct categories of the industry have arisen some of the cannabis’s brightest stars.

The article, titled “The 5 Most Influential People on the Cannabis Landscape,” was published in the December 2017 / January 2018 edition of HydroLife Magazine. Within the article, Kent’s choices for the most significant characters in the cannabis industry are Ed Rosenthal, Rafael Mechoulam, Rick Simpson, Jorge Cervantes, and Steve D’Angelo. The HydroLife readership seems to agree with Kent, as the piece has proven to be one of the magazine’s most popular articles to date.

Looking at M&F Talent News, we will break the magazine article into five separate future posts. Each post will feature an excerpt from the article “The 5 Most Influential People on the Cannabis Landscape” taken directly from HydroLife Magazine.

Without further introduction, here is the intro to the piece as published in HydroLife Magazine:

As the contemporary cannabis space grows out of a shadowy culture now lost in time—one of a secret society of underground cultivators shrouded in paranoid mystique—it is worth noting how these progressions were made possible. Looking at the cannabis space as a whole, there exist several identifiable streams of energy that eventually ran together to aid in the manifestation the cannabis industry as we know it, in early 2018. These influential movements arise from four divergent headwaters: horticulture, advocacy, medical science, and business.

The modernized, legal world of marijuana came about as these varied components reacted with one another in novel and unexpected ways—giving birth to a brand-new marketplace wrought with all the possibilities for corruptibility and hope present in adolescence. Along this line of thought, the realms of horticulture, advocacy, medical science, and business are populated and influenced by bright, hopeful individuals who have dedicated their lives to spreading awareness about this amazing plant.

Standing at the forefront of the contemporary cannabis space are iconoclasts who shaped the industry as we know it, by taking chances and standing up for what they believe in—often times in the face of legal persecution and moral oppression. As 2017 comes to a close, HydroLife has put some serious time into designating “The 5 Most Influential People in the Cannabis Space.” While none of these figure is singularly responsible for the progressions of marijuana culture, whether it be in medical science or business, each one of them instilled the streams of progress with creativity and defiance—with these fertile confluences eventually taking shape in the cannabis industry of today.
